Thursday night, midnight, I stepped not the indoor soccer field at Uihlein soccer park to play my first game in over a year. I can’t say I was good. I can’t say I made a huge difference on the team, but I can say I scored. We lost, but I scored. That is the way to make a comeback.
All in all it felt really good. My knees, both of them, where a bit sore after the game and into the next day, but that was to be expected. At least that is what I expected. My lugs burned while playing, mostly in the second half when my body became fatigued. Yet for a while everything felt good.
Sure there where nerves and a bit of fear when the game started. I ran a little slow and didn’t throw my self into situation I would have in the past. I won a few good balls, on header even. I made a few good passes. I even as I pointed out scored.
So what the team lost. We had a full squad, but the other team had an army. By the middle of the second half I was not the only one tired. Yet we played on and dropped one more goal in the second half.
This game gave me a gauge of my status and I have a long way to go before I’m ready to play man’s again. But it’s a start and you always have to start somewhere when making a comeback.
